Sean O’Rourke has been a proud member of UA Local 290 for 36 years, beginning his career in 1990 as a Metal Trades apprentice and becoming a Metal Trades Journeyman in 1994. In 1997, he took his Building Trades test, continuing to expand his skills and experience across the industry.
Over the course of his career, Sean has worked in shipyards, mill shutdowns, semiconductor facilities, fabrication shops, and the tool move industry, gaining extensive experience in some of the most demanding areas of our trade. His career includes 7½ years in the shipyards, and work as a pipefitter in fabrication shops, shutdowns, and tool moves.
Sean’s commitment to the membership goes beyond the jobsite. He has served on the Local 290 JATC, helped proctor Building Trades examinations, and served as a Metal Trades Business Agent for 3½ years.
For Sean, leadership has always been about serving the membership, listening to their concerns, and making sure every member has a voice.
“Growing up with my dad as a Metal Trades Business Agent, I saw firsthand how he helped members, how he led, and how he gave members a voice. That experience inspired me to get involved and do the same for others.”
Sean believes Local 290 is strongest when members stand together.
He chose to support Team Joe because he sees Joe as someone who works diligently to ensure every member is treated equally and represented, and who leads through his actions.
For Sean, Team Joe represents an opportunity to build more solidarity, less division, greater transparency, integrity, and accountability throughout Local 290.
One of Sean’s biggest priorities is bringing the union and its training programs closer together and making sure both sides are working toward the same goal: serving the membership.
“Serving the membership means always being there when members reach out, listening to them, and helping educate them about their contracts, working rules, and the resources available to them.”
For Sean, union leadership should be about working alongside the membership—not being above it.
He wants to see a Local 290 where members feel heard, respected, and represented, and where leadership works to build solidarity and strengthen the union rather than create division.
Every member represented.
Every voice heard.
A stronger Local 290.
Sean’s life isn’t all pipefitting and union work.
When he isn’t working or serving Local 290, Sean enjoys spending time with his family, following sports, traveling, and making time for the people who matter most to him.
After 36 years in the trade, Sean understands that the work we do is important—but so is the life we work so hard to provide for ourselves and our families.
For Sean, it’s about more than the jobsite. It’s about the people and the life that make the work worthwhile.
